The House Under the Heads in Krakow

Dom Pod Głowami, also known as the Trembecki Tenement, is a historic building located in Kraków, in the Old Town district at 5 Długa Street. Built in the Neo-Renaissance style in 1889 according to a design by Maksymilian Nitsch for the Kraków stonemason Adam Trembecki, the tenement stands out for its richly decorated front façade. In 2020, it underwent a conservation renovation, which helped preserve its unique architectural features. The façade boasts impressive decorations, including a sculpture of an eagle of impressive size placed above the entrance gate. Additionally, above the ground-floor windows, there are cartouches with carved depictions of historical figures: Stefan Czarniecki, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, Tadeusz Kościuszko, and Hugo Kołłątaj, created by Michał Korpala. These elements not only testify to the artistic craftsmanship of the era but also highlight the building's historical and cultural significance as a symbol of patriotism and national identity. Dom Pod Głowami is an important landmark on the map of Kraków, serving as an excellent example of Neo-Renaissance architecture and a site of importance to local history. An interesting fact is that the tenement simultaneously served both residential and utilitarian functions, which was characteristic of urban buildings of that period.
