The Underground of the Main Market Square in Krakow

The Underground of the Main Market Square in Krakow is an extensive exhibition located beneath the eastern part of the market square, covering an area of over 6,000 m², with nearly 4,000 m² dedicated to archaeology. The museum, opened on September 24, 2010, was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The architecture of the underground exhibition, designed by Professor Andrzej Kadłuczka, combines modern solutions with historical contexts, creating unique spaces where visitors can explore the history of Krakow. The permanent exhibition "Following the European Identity of Krakow" is a multimedia spectacle that transports guests back to the Middle Ages, illustrating the atmosphere of the Krakow market square using modern technologies such as holograms and touch screens. The exhibition features numerous artifacts, including coins, ceramics, medieval tools, and a unique 693-kilogram lump of lead. The history and commercial traditions of Krakow are confirmed by preserved soil profiles and various everyday objects that depict the lives of the city's inhabitants in past centuries. Visitors can wander through underground corridors, admiring reconstructions of craft workshops and relics of ancient settlements. The exhibition is enhanced by an educational zone for children and projection rooms, making it a place for both adults and the youngest visitors. Historical values are combined here with a modern approach to museology, making the Underground of the Main Market Square not only an exhibition space but also an important point on Krakow's cultural map.
