wikipedia
Tubular bells, known as campane tubolari, are an idiophone instrument consisting of metal tubes with a diameter of 3–4 cm, mounted on a common frame. Sound is produced by striking the top of the tubes with a hammer covered in felt or leather, resembling the sound of church bells. Tuning is done chromatically from C to F5 (notated an octave higher: C6–F6), and the tubes are arranged similarly to a piano keyboard, which facilitates playing. The ability to dampen the sound is provided both by hand action and through the use of a pedal. Tubular bells gained the interest of symphonic composers from the 19th century onward, and in rock music, they were popularized by Mike Oldfield on his album "Tubular Bells". The instrument has its roots in Asia, which highlights its distinctiveness in the context of musical instruments. An interesting fact is that tubular bells have become an icon not only in classical music but also in pop culture, bridging diverse styles and eras. Their unique sound and construction make them a popular choice in various arrangements, from symphony orchestras to modern rock compositions.
