Underground tourist routes in Jarosław

Jarosław, a town in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, offers two underground tourist routes that provide a fascinating journey through the region's history and architecture. The first one, the Prof. Feliks Zalewski Underground Tourist Route, is a complex of cellars dating back to the 15th–17th centuries, located beneath a tenement house at Rynek 14. Its history dates back to the 1950s, when water supply failures revealed damage to buildings in the Old Town. At that time, protective works were initiated by the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, which contributed to the preservation of this historical complex. The route is 150 meters long, reaches a depth of 9 meters at its lowest point, and was opened on June 1, 1984. The research and adaptation of the route led to the honoring of Prof. Zalewski in recognition of his efforts to save the Old Town complex. The site is open to tourists year-round, but visits are only possible in guided groups. The second attraction is the Underground Tourist Passage, which connects the cellars beneath three tenement houses at Rynek 4, 5, and 6. Opened on December 6, 2015, it was created as part of the "Jarosław–Uzhgorod" project and is 187 meters long, reaching a maximum depth of 5.6 meters. Along the route, there are archaeological and historical exhibitions, including a virtual boat journey that references the trade routes along the Vistula and San rivers in the 16th and 17th centuries, allowing visitors to explore the images of cities such as Sandomierz, Warsaw, Toruń, and Gdańsk. The route attractively showcases the life of Jarosław's residents during its heyday and documents efforts to save the Old Town from flooding. Both routes not only serve as important tourist attractions but also as valuable sources of knowledge about local culture and history, attracting numerous visitors eager to explore the region's rich heritage.
