wikipedia
The Biela Voda Valley, also known as Bielovodská dolina, is a striking lower section of the High Tatras in Slovakia. Stretching over 10 kilometers in length, its characteristic glacial trough shape was carved into granite and is surrounded by picturesque forests and towering rock walls. The Biela Voda stream flows along the valley floor, merging with the Rybí Potok to form the Białka River. The valley is a popular destination for hikers and climbers, thanks to its natural attractions, including numerous mountain lakes and waterfalls—most notably the highest waterfall in the Tatra Mountains, the Veľký vodopád (Ciężka Siklawa). Mountain tourism thrives here, although the Biela Voda Valley has no mountain huts, making it especially appealing to those seeking wilderness and tranquility. It is a protected area within the Tatra National Park (TANAP), underscoring its importance for nature conservation. The valley features several alpine meadows, such as Biela Voda, Polana pod Žabím, and Polana pod Vysokou, as well as mysterious side valleys that remain a challenge for climbers to this day. The history of the valley dates back to times when it was used for grazing by local highlanders. However, overexploitation and the purchase of the land by Prince Christian Hohenlohe in the 19th century significantly limited its economic use. A short-term tourist shelter once existed in the valley, and its popularity grew during the 19th century, especially among Polish tourists. An interesting historical note is that the first winter crossing of the valley was made by Theodor Wundt and his guide Jakob Horvay in 1884. The valley is also home to rare plant and animal species, and its remote, inaccessible areas serve as valuable sanctuaries for bears. Combining natural beauty, rich history, and cultural significance, the Biela Voda Valley remains one of the most stunning corners of the Tatra Mountains.
