wikipedia
Winiary is an administrative district in the northern part of Poznań, forming part of the historical area known as Winiary, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. The name derives from the vineyards that once existed in the area. The boundaries of Winiary are marked by the PST route to the east, Urbanowska Street to the south, and Szydłowska and Witosa Streets to the west. The district features diverse architecture, including both residential blocks (4- and 10-story buildings) and single-family homes in the Trójpole area. Historically, Winiary consisted of two parts: Winiary kmiece and Winiary zagrodnicze, each with distinct functions and layouts. The area is rich in historical monuments, including the Church of St. Stanisław Kostka and the convent complex of the Sisters of the Divine Shepherd, which serves as the center of religious life. Winiary also preserves 19th-century roadside shrines and buildings of the Poznań University of Life Sciences. In terms of culture, the Koło Śpiewacze Gędźba choir, established in 1923, deserves special mention for integrating the local community through musical performances. The history of the district is also linked to the arrival of Bamberg settlers in the 18th century, which influenced the development of the village. In the 20th century, Winiary underwent intense urbanization and, after World War II, was transformed into a full-fledged urban district, though it retained its rural character until the 1970s. Winiary is also known for its well-developed transportation infrastructure, including a tram line that reached the district as early as 1935. Residents benefit from numerous bus lines, facilitating easy access to the city center. The district has a mixed character, with green areas such as the Wierzbak Valley, research laboratories at the Biocentrum, and modern facilities like the Poznań Plaza shopping center. In 2011, the administrative districts of Winiary and Powstańców Warszawy were merged, increasing the significance of this unit within Poznań's administrative structure. Winiary attracts with its history and architecture, serving as a place where tradition and modernity intertwine.
