The Zgierz Commune, located in the Łódź Voivodeship within Zgierz County, covers an area of 199.05 km², of which 59% is agricultural land and 29% is forested. The commune is home to four nature reserves, including Ciosny, which protects common junipers, and Dąbrowa Grotnicka, which surrounds a light oak forest and thermophilic plants. Zgierz Commune has a rich history, established on January 1, 1973, initially with 33 village districts, most of which previously belonged to neighboring communes. In 1975, the commune's territory was expanded with additional village districts, and in 1988, it was reduced due to the incorporation of certain areas into the city of Zgierz and Łódź. Zgierz features historic churches, such as the wooden Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Biała and a 19th-century blacksmith's building in Kębliny. The commune maintains several educational institutions, including one kindergarten and seven primary schools. Transportation in the commune is well-developed, with the A2 highway and several national and regional roads. The commune also has a rich partnership program that supports cultural and economic cooperation with other regions. Zgierz once operated a tram system, which was suspended in February 2018 due to poor technical condition. Thus, Zgierz Commune is an interesting place with a rich history, nature, and traditions, while also being a dynamically developing area.
