wikipedia
The Co-Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as St. Mary's Basilica, is an impressive example of Gothic brick architecture, built in Gdańsk between 1346 and 1502. It is one of the largest brick churches in the world, and its silhouette, with its distinctive bell tower and slender spires, dominates the city's skyline. Construction began under the privileges granted by the Teutonic Order. The church was built on the site of an earlier wooden structure, and its complex history includes both Catholic and Lutheran influences following the Reformation in the 16th century. The interior of the basilica houses many valuable works of art, including renowned sculptures and altars, such as the main altar created by Master Michael. Historical changes the church has undergone include restorations after damage during World War II and the return of many valuable items from museums. Interestingly, the basilica's tower, standing 82 meters tall, offers a panoramic view of Gdańsk. The 15th-century astronomical clock, an extraordinary achievement of ancient masters, and the rich decoration of the church, which combines elements from various eras, make the basilica not only a place of worship but also an important landmark on Gdańsk's cultural and historical map. In recent years, a series of restoration works have been carried out, restoring the splendor of this extraordinary temple and contributing to the organization of various cultural events that attract both tourists and residents of the city.
