wikipedia
Gdańsk Śródmieście, known as Stadtmitte, is an administrative and representative district of key importance, located in the central part of the city on the Motława River. The area of this historic part of the city is 338 hectares. It is worth noting that before World War II, there were about 5,500 buildings here, many of which were destroyed during the bombings in 1945. Architecturally, various areas stand out, such as the Old Town with monuments like the Old Town Hall and St. Catherine's Church, and the Main Town with the Royal Route and iconic structures like St. Mary's Basilica and the Neptune Fountain. Nowe Ogrody, on the other hand, is an area dominated by administrative buildings, while Grodzisko refers to historical fortifications from the 17th to 19th centuries. Stare Przedmieście and Biskupia Górka are other interesting places with preserved historical buildings. Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island), formerly an industrial area, is almost completely destroyed but remains a site with a rich history. Transportation in the district is well-developed, with numerous bus and tram connections, as well as Gdańsk Główny railway station, which serves many train connections. Śródmieście is also a venue for numerous cultural events and home to institutions such as the Baltic Philharmonic and the National Maritime Museum. The district is home to many natural monuments, including chestnut trees, which contribute to the aesthetics of the public space. An interesting fact is that many historical sites and recreational areas are linked to the rich history of Gdańsk, where significant events took place, such as the battles in 1939. The District Council, headed by Chairwoman Elżbieta Woroniecka, works on the development of this dynamic and vibrant urban space.
