wikipedia
Biskupia Górka, known in Kashubian as Biskùpiô Góra, is a hill rising 60.8 meters above sea level, forming part of Gdańsk and marking the boundary between the Śródmieście and Chełm districts. The history of this site dates back to the Middle Ages, when a settlement known as "Górka" was owned by the bishops of Kuyavia. In the 14th century, a defensive manor stood here, and after being damaged in wars, Biskupia Górka became part of Gdańsk's defense system. In the 17th century, earthen fortifications such as the Bastions of the Savior (Zbawiciel), Intermediate (Pośredni), and Ostroróg were erected, forming part of the city's extensive defensive network, which evolved over the centuries. In the 19th century, the fortifications were expanded and adapted to new military technologies. After World War I, the area became a recreational space. During the interwar period, the Pawła Beneke Youth Hostel was built—an impressive architectural complex with a tower that became a dominant feature of Biskupia Górka's landscape. During World War II, a stalag (prisoner-of-war camp) was established here, and after the war, the facility was used by various services, including the Ministry of Public Security and the Police. In recent years, Biskupia Górka has gained significance as a recreational and social activity hub, as well as a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of Gdańsk. Numerous historical monuments remain here, such as earthen fortifications and the Barracks Redoubt (Reduta Koszarowa), along with historic tenement houses that testify to the district's long history and architectural heritage. The site is also renowned for its panoramic views of Gdańsk, which have been captured by artists and photographers over the centuries, including the oldest known depiction from 1592. Biskupia Górka remains an attractive destination for both residents and tourists, blending rich cultural heritage with stunning views of the city.
