wikipedia
Bydgoszcz Forest (Puszcza Bydgoska) is an extensive forest complex in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, covering over 45,000 hectares. It is situated between Bydgoszcz and Toruń, bounded by the Vistula, Noteć, and Tążyna rivers. The region features diverse landscapes, including fields of inland dunes covered with pine forests mixed with oak and birch trees. The forest has a rich history dating back to the times of the Kuyavian dukes and Polish kings; from the 15th to the 17th century, it was known as the Royal Bydgoszcz Forests. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the woods were exploited to meet the needs of cities such as Bydgoszcz and Solec Kujawski, leading to conflicts over the administration of these areas. After World War II, the forest began to be managed by the State Forests, and intensive forestry was conducted within its boundaries. Bydgoszcz Forest bears numerous traces of human activity, including remnants of a military training ground and the DAG Fabrik Bromberg explosives factory from World War II, which has been transformed into a tourist attraction – Exploseum. The natural environment of Bydgoszcz Forest is rich in diverse plant and animal species, including many protected ones, and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The area is valuable not only for its nature but also historically; during World War II, the forest became the site of numerous executions of Polish and Jewish people, commemorated by symbolic graves and memorial plaques. Today, Bydgoszcz Forest attracts tourists with its hiking and cycling trails, as well as educational nature paths. Its rich fauna, including over 100 species of birds and various mammals, makes the region an ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. As a place of cultural and ecological significance, the forest also features numerous national memorial sites, making it not only a tourist attraction but also an important area of historical value in Poland.
