wikipedia
Granary Island, also known as Speicherinsel, is a historic island located in Gdańsk, situated on the Motława River within the Śródmieście district. It was formed as a result of the excavation of the New Motława in 1576, though its history dates back to the 13th century when the construction of granaries began. By the 16th century, there were already around 340 granaries, which played a key industrial role in the region. These granaries were large, multi-story buildings constructed from wood, brick, and stone, often equipped with loading and unloading docks. Strict regulations were enforced on the island to protect the warehouses from theft, including a complete ban on nighttime presence and the use of guard dogs. After World War II, a significant portion of the structures was destroyed during the fighting, and only three of the many granaries survived. In recent years, the island has undergone considerable transformation, with numerous construction projects completed, such as the Deo Plaza apartment-hotel complex and modern developments like Granaria, which pay homage to the historic architecture. The island retains part of its original character, particularly in its northern section, where the ruins of granaries are still visible. Notable as well is the modern St. Spirit Footbridge, which connects the northern part of the island with Długie Pobrzeże and stands as an innovative architectural solution. Granary Island blends rich cultural and historical heritage with modern urban aspirations, making it an attractive destination for both residents and tourists.
