Great Island is a charming island located on the Odrza River in Wrocław, encompassing the neighborhoods of Bartoszowice, Biskupin, Dąbie, Sępolno, Szczytniki, Zacisze, and Zalesie, forming the eastern part of the former Śródmieście district. The name of the island, proposed by Professor Wanda Kononowicz in December 1980, gained popularity and recognition from the Wrocław City Council. The island's areas were once part of the left bank of the Odrza River until the 16th century. Then, as a result of digging a new riverbed between 1531 and 1555, they ended up on the right bank, separated from other areas only by old river channels. This area is connected to downtown Wrocław via the Zwierzyniecki and Szczytnicki bridges, and the island itself took its current shape thanks to the construction of lateral canals between 1912 and 1917, which are crossed by the Jagiellońskie and Chrobrego bridges. Additionally, the Bartoszowicki Bridge connects the island to the embankment between the canals. In December 2023, Aleja Wielkiej Wyspy (Great Island Avenue) was opened, facilitating transportation to the southern districts of Wrocław. Great Island is protected as a natural and landscape complex within the Szczytnicki Natural and Landscape Complex, highlighting its natural beauty. The island is home to many significant architectural and cultural sites, such as the Zoo, the Centennial Hall with the Iglica (Spire), and the Werkbund architectural exhibition. Szczytnicki Park with the Japanese Garden and the Olympic Stadium also attract the attention of residents and tourists, while the Olympic Bridge serves as an important transportation link. With its rich history and dynamic development, Great Island is a place that combines natural values with diverse cultural and architectural attractions, making it a key point on the map of Wrocław.
