wikipedia
Krosno Odrzańskie, located in the Lubusz Voivodeship, is a picturesque town with a rich history dating back to at least 1005, when it was first mentioned in the chronicle of Thietmar. Built in Lower Silesia, it has witnessed important historical events over the centuries, including the struggles between Bolesław Chrobry and Henry II. The town, which at various times belonged to the Duchy of Głogów and Brandenburg, suffered significant destruction during the Thirty Years' War and World War II, when 60–70% of its buildings were devastated. Today, a slow process of rebuilding and renovating the damaged structures is underway. Architectural gems of Krosno Odrzańskie include the 13th-century Piast castle, which served as the dynasty's seat, and the 14th-century town defensive walls. Also worth noting are the neo-Gothic Church of St. Andrew the Apostle and the historic site associated with the Church of St. Hedwig of Silesia, built in the 18th century. Culture in Krosno Odrzańskie is vibrant, thanks in part to regional institutions such as the Castle Art and Cultural Centre, which offers a variety of cultural events. In 2021, St. Hedwig of Silesia was declared the town's patron saint, adding to its spiritual heritage. An interesting feature is the presence of the Silesian Walls within the town—mysterious earth structures of unclear origins, considered the longest archaeological monument in Central Europe. Krosno Odrzańskie is also a sports hub, home to the Municipal Sports Club "Tęcza" and active in various disciplines, including football and volleyball. The town engages in international cooperation, with partnerships established with towns such as Schwarzheide and Karcag, highlighting its openness to the world.
