The Międzyrzecz Commune, with its seat in the town of the same name in the Lubusz Voivodeship, is an urban-rural commune established in 1991. However, its history dates back to earlier years when two independent local governments operated: the town of Międzyrzecz and the Międzyrzecz Commune. The commune covers an area of 315.36 km² and has a population of 23,920 (as of 2022), resulting in a population density of 76 people per km². It is located in the picturesque part of the Wielkopolska Lowland, which includes the Lubusz Lake District, characterized by beautiful flora and fauna and a high degree of forestation, amounting to 49.3%. The dominant forms of land use are forest and agricultural areas. The region is home to the Nietoperek Nature Reserve, which protects a colony of bats. The commune enjoys a relatively warm climate, with an average annual temperature of 8°C and varied precipitation. Międzyrzecz is not only a place rich in nature but also offers a diverse cultural scene. It is home to the Międzyrzecz Cultural Center, which includes a 3D cinema, a community center, and a public library. Education is well-developed; the commune has kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools, including the Heliodor Święcickiego General Secondary School. Important elements of sports infrastructure include the Municipal Stadium, an events and sports hall, and modern multi-functional sports fields. Międzyrzecz is historically significant due to the development of rail transport, which flourished in the 19th century when the railway station was built, turning the town into a railway hub. Today, the commune is well-connected thanks to the S3 expressway and numerous provincial and municipal roads. The commune engages in international cooperation with several partners, contributing to its activity on the European stage. It is a place with a rich history and diverse landscape that attracts both tourists and residents.
