Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk

The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, opened on March 23, 2017, is a cultural institution established in 2008. Its main goal is to disseminate knowledge about World War II from a Polish perspective, promote the memory of the victims of totalitarian regimes, and honor the heroes of the fight for freedom. The museum preserves the memory of the years 1939–1945 and operates under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The museum complex, designed by the Gdynia-based architectural studio "Kwadrat," covers an area of approximately 23,000 m², with the main exhibition spanning 5,000 m², making it one of the largest historical exhibitions in the world. The building stands out for its modern architecture and a glass tower offering panoramic views of Gdańsk. The museum collects artifacts related to the history of World War II, conducts research and educational activities, and organizes temporary exhibitions, many of which explore various aspects of the war and its consequences. The main exhibition has received acclaim, though it has also faced criticism; some commentators have pointed out the need for a better representation of daily life during the war, as well as controversies surrounding the presentation and interpretation of certain events. To date, the museum has organized numerous temporary exhibitions, covering topics such as the Polish Armed Forces during World War II and the contribution of the Polish-American community to the conflict. Notably, the museum features a Youth Council that engages young people in decision-making and organizational processes, highlighting the importance of historical education for future generations. The architectural and educational foundations of the museum aim not only to preserve memory but also to inspire reflection on history and foster the development of an engaged civil society.
