wikipedia
Opoczno is a town in the Łódzkie Voivodeship with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The first wooden church was mentioned here as early as 1191. In 1284, the settlement was incorporated into the Sandomierz Collegiate Church, and in 1365 it was granted town rights. Opoczno developed dynamically, becoming an important trade center located on the route from Toruń to Lviv. The town changed administrative hands several times, witnessed military skirmishes, and suffered destruction during the Swedish Deluge. Among its most important historical monuments are a 14th-century castle, now a museum, the Church of St. Bartholomew with its Gothic origins, and a parsonage from 1622. Another interesting site is the "Esterka" House, a legendary building associated with the beloved of King Casimir the Great. In the 19th century, ceramic production began, contributing to the town's economic development. Opoczno also has modern transport connections, including railway stations and a well-developed road network. During World War II, the town became the site of tragic events related to the ghetto for the Jewish population. After the war, infrastructure and education developed, including the establishment of higher education institutions. It is also worth mentioning air pollution, which in 2016 placed Opoczno among the most polluted towns in the European Union. The town has a vibrant cultural life, with a Municipal Cultural Center and local weekly newspapers. Honorary citizens of Opoczno include Pope John Paul II and Edward Śmigły-Rydz. Throughout its history, Opoczno has blended tradition, culture, and modernity, making it an interesting place both to live in and to visit.
