wikipedia
The Basilica of St. Nicholas in Gdańsk is a Gothic monastic church of the Dominicans, dating back to the 14th–15th centuries, with a rich history stretching as far as the 12th century. The first Romanesque church dedicated to St. Nicholas, likely built in 1185, was located at the intersection of important trade routes. In 1227, the Pomeranian Duke Świętopełk handed the church over to the Dominican Order, and it was consecrated in 1239. The most characteristic architectural feature is its three-nave hall structure with a triple roof and octagonal pillars supporting the vaults. The basilica is enriched with numerous chapels, including the Chapel of St. Hyacinth and St. Joseph. The interior is adorned with rich furnishings, such as the main altar from 1643, depicting St. Nicholas kneeling before Christ. The church also houses several side altars, including the altar of St. Rose of Lima, and Baroque organs considered among the finest in the region. Historically, the church has endured many turbulent events, including destruction during the Reformation and World War II, yet it was never completely destroyed, making it unique among Gdańsk’s historic monuments. An interesting fact is that in 1945, the Dominicans returned to Gdańsk, bringing with them the icon of Our Lady of Victory, which held special spiritual significance. In the 1960s, the basilica became a center of intellectual and opposition activity, and today it hosts various pastoral ministries, including the Academic Chaplaincy and the Center for Information on New Religious Movements. Designated a Minor Basilica in 1929, it is a venue for numerous fairs and pilgrimages, underscoring its important role in the life of the local community. It is also worth noting that most of the church’s furnishings survived the wartime destruction, making it a treasury of art and cultural history.
