Szprotawa Stone Road Sign Park

The Szprotawa Stone Signpost Park is a unique collection of approximately 30 historic signposts from the 19th century and earlier, located mainly in the vicinity of the village of Wiechlice and other towns in the Szprotawa municipality, such as Henryków, Nowa Kopernia, Borowina, and Cieciszów. Many of these artifacts have dates carved on their reverse sides, allowing for precise historical contextualization, and they often serve an informational function, indicating travel directions and town boundaries. In 2005, some of the signposts were included in the Municipal Register of Monuments, highlighting their architectural and cultural significance. The origin of this phenomenon dates back to 2002, when volunteer heritage guardians conducted an inventory of these objects. In subsequent years, some of the signposts were restored, and their history and scientific value were documented. It is worth noting that in 2007, two specimens were stolen, but thanks to swift action, they were recovered. In 2012, all the signposts were incorporated into a park program, and the Museum of the Szprotawa Land revitalized one of them in Henryków. In 2015, a signpost was discovered in Wiechlice, and in 2019, further artifacts were inventoried on behalf of the Lubusz Provincial Heritage Conservator. An interesting find is a road stone discovered by the Lower Silesian Forests Society in 2021, which, in German, informed travelers that prior permission was required to use the road, highlighting historical notions of privacy and property rights. The "Wiechlice Loop" tourist trail allows visitors to explore these valuable cultural assets, which attract both tourists and history researchers. The Szprotawa Stone Signpost Park is not only an important part of the region's cultural heritage but also a testament to the evolution of communication and property rights in earlier eras.
