The Castle of the Knights Hospitaller in Łagów

The Castle of the Knights Hospitaller in Łagów, located in the Lubusz Voivodeship on the isthmus between Łagowskie and Ciecz lakes, is a site rich in history and architecture. Built in the 14th century in the Gothic style by the Knights Hospitaller, it served as the seat of their commandery until 1810. It then passed into private hands and underwent further modifications in the 19th century. The castle was renovated between 1964 and 1970, which helped preserve its unique features. Architecturally, the castle takes the form of a quadrangle with a distinctive 35-meter corner tower, known as a keep, and well-preserved Gothic defensive walls. The interior of the castle houses valuable elements, such as a hall with a Gothic vault supported by a single pillar and a Baroque fireplace in the knights' hall dating back to 1740. Today, the castle houses a hotel, making it not only a tourist attraction but also a cultural venue, drawing numerous visitors. Interesting photographs and lithographs, including one from 1863, depict the castle throughout different eras, while the picturesque backdrop of the lakes adds to its charm. The Castle of the Knights Hospitaller is not only an example of Gothic architecture but also a testament to the rich history of knightly orders in Poland.
