Zgorzelecki County, located in the western part of Lower Silesia near the border with Germany, was established in 1999 as a result of administrative reform. Its seat is Zgorzelec, a city with a rich history that also serves as the cultural center of the region. The county includes urban, urban-rural, and rural municipalities, such as Zawidów, Bogatynia, and Pieńsk. Prior to the administrative reform, the county was part of the Jelenia Góra Voivodeship. The county is traversed by important roads, including the A4 motorway and several national roads, which facilitate transport and communication. Additionally, the county has a railway network, including the E30 line, contributing to the development of the local economy. In 2019, the unemployment rate was around 5%, indicating a relatively stable labor market situation. The largest river in the county is the Lusatian Neisse, which adds to the region's picturesque character. Demographically, the county has experienced a decline in population—from 89,188 in 2019 to 88,770 in 2020—which may reflect migration trends. From an architectural perspective, the county is characterized by a diversity of monuments, ranging from historical buildings to modern public facilities that adorn its municipalities. Culturally, the region is a place where Polish and German traditions intersect, influencing social life and local customs. Interestingly, among the county administrators since 1998 are figures such as Szymon Pacyniak and Artur Bieliński, who held the position during various terms. Zgorzelecki County is also an important point on the tourist map of Lower Silesia, offering natural attractions and opportunities to spend time in scenic surroundings, which attracts both residents and tourists.
