wikipedia
Łukawiec is a village located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, known for its rich history and architectural value. Recognized as a village with Vlach law rights, its history dates back to the second half of the 15th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was part of the Bełz Voivodeship and the Łukawiec estate of the Przemyśl bishops. The period of World War II significantly impacted the fate of Łukawiec, where Ukrainian nationalists from the OUN-UPA murdered 12 Poles. In 1944, the village witnessed battles between Polish and Soviet partisans against the Nazis, and the local cemetery is the resting place of soldiers of the Polish Army as well as MO Corporal Stanisław Starzewski. Among the notable figures associated with Łukawiec are Bolesław Müller – a reserve officer who died in a prisoner-of-war camp – and Archbishop Mieczysław Mokrzycki, the personal secretary of popes. The architecture of Łukawiec is represented by two historic churches: the former Greek Catholic Church of St. Demetrius the Martyr, built in 1701, and the Roman Catholic Church of the Epiphany from 1754. The former church, converted into a warehouse, has undergone revitalization, while the Catholic church is an example of a modest wooden structure retaining medieval features. An important place of worship is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Łukawiec, which houses a painting renowned for its miraculous properties. Culture in Łukawiec is nurtured through the Municipal Public Library and the Village Community Center, as well as the annual Review of Marian Songs, which attracts both residents and tourists. Surrounded by beautiful nature, there is the "Moczary" nature reserve and a natural monument – an impressive pedunculate oak. The village is home to the People's Sports Club "UNIA" Łukawiec, promoting physical activity within the local community. Łukawiec, with its rich history and traditions, is an important point on the map of the Podkarpacie region.
