wikipedia
Załuż is a village located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, in the Sanok district, on the San River. It is surrounded by picturesque hills, and its geography includes the Wujski and Załużanka streams. Historical mentions of the locality date back to 1433. The name of the village derives from the term "za ługom" (meaning "beyond the wetlands/marshes"). Nearby are the ruins of Sobień Castle, which played a role in Polish history, associated with Władysław Jagiełło and the knightly Kmita family. In the 19th century, Załuż came into the hands of various owners, including the Ossoliński and Wiktor families, who contributed to the development of rural infrastructure by establishing a school and a chapel. The Greek Catholic church, built in 1820, was destroyed during World War II, while many residents emigrated or were assimilated into Russian culture. It is worth noting that the village had a rich social life, with organizations such as the TSL (Towarzystwo Szkoły Ludowej – People's School Association), the Riflemen's Association, and housewives' circles. After the outbreak of World War II, Załuż found itself in the Soviet zone, and its inhabitants were resettled, leading to tragic events. Architecturally, the village has preserved historical buildings, including the manor house and the Viktor family's tomb chapel. An interesting fact is the discovery of oil deposits and pyrite in the nearby areas. Notable natives of Załuż include Benedykt Majkowski, which underscores the local cultural significance of this locality.
