Bieszczady County, with its seat in Ustrzyki Dolne, is located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship and was established as part of the administrative reform in 1999. It is an area of exceptional natural and cultural value, forming part of the former Krosno Voivodeship. It borders Ukraine and Slovakia, giving it a cross-border character. As the least populated county in Poland, it boasts extremely picturesque landscapes. The Carpathian nature attracts tourists, and its greatest assets include the Bieszczady National Park and numerous hiking and cycling trails. Ustrzyki Dolne features local architecture and tourist infrastructure, including mountain shelters that are popular vacation spots. In terms of culture, Bieszczady County is known for its multi-ethnic character, with a rich history of Lemko and Bieszczady culture, reflected in traditions, folklore, and local festivals. Between 1999 and 2022, the county was governed by three starosts, and their terms were a significant element of local politics. The history of the county dates back to Austrian times, and until 1918, these areas belonged to Hungary. Interestingly, despite its low population, Bieszczady County offers a variety of services, attractions, and forms of recreation, making it a destination for nature, history, and tourism enthusiasts. Today, it is an excellent example of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
