Nidzica County, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, was established in 1999 as a result of administrative reform. Its seat is the town of Nidzica, which serves as the administrative and cultural center of the region. The county includes one urban-rural municipality—Nidzica—and three rural municipalities: Janowiec Kościelny, Janowo, and Kozłowo. In 2019, the population of the county was 32,857, which decreased to 32,753 by the end of June 2020. In terms of population, Nidzica County has struggled with declining trends, particularly evident in data from 2000–2005. In 1970, the county had 34,600 inhabitants, but this number gradually decreased over the years. Architecturally, Nidzica is known for its 14th-century Gothic castle, which is an important tourist attraction and a testament to the region's rich history. Built by the Teutonic Knights, the castle played a key role in defending against invasions and conflicts with neighboring powers. Historically, the region held strategic importance as part of Royal Prussia until the 19th century and during World War II, which influenced its development and settlement patterns. The culture of Nidzica County is closely tied to Warmian-Masurian traditions. The region hosts numerous festivals, fairs, and folk events that celebrate local traditions and crafts. The residents of the county cherish their customs, which form a valuable part of the regional cultural identity. Interestingly, local events often bring the community together and attract tourists, contributing to the development of the local economy. Nidzica and the surrounding areas also offer rich natural attractions, with numerous hiking trails and recreational areas. Nidzica County borders several other counties, such as Działdowo, Ostróda, Olsztyn, Szczytno, and the Masovian counties of Przasnysz and Mława, fostering regional cooperation and cultural exchange. This geographical and cultural diversity makes Nidzica County an interesting place to both live and visit, combining rich history, beautiful landscapes, and the vitality of local traditions.
