wikipedia
Widzew, a district of Łódź until December 31, 1992, is characterized by diverse architecture and a rich history. Until the 18th century, it was a small village with limited agricultural development, but after the partitions of Poland and the creation of the Congress Poland, it began to develop dynamically. A turning point was the arrival of industrialists such as Juliusz Kunitzer, who invested in the construction of cotton factories, which led to an increase in the number of inhabitants and the transformation of Widzew from a village into a factory settlement. Industrial activity attracted peasants from the surrounding areas, who sold their land and found work in the newly established factories. In the 19th century, Widzew became known as "Red Widzew," famous for numerous strikes and workers' protests. After multiple administrative changes, Widzew was formally incorporated into Łódź in 1946, and from 1954 it was a city district. From an urban planning perspective, Widzew encompasses numerous housing estates, including Widzew Wschód, as well as various historical landmarks such as the Księży Młyn complex, the Museum of Cinematography, and the National Film School. Widzew is also a sports center, known for the football club RTS Widzew Łódź. The district is home to Poland's largest railway freight terminal, Łódź Olechów, and numerous industrial plants, some with long-standing traditions. An interesting fact is the existence of the Widzew Ex Libris Gallery in the Dom Kultury 502, which is the only permanent ex libris gallery in Łódź and one of the oldest in Poland. The district is also rich in green areas with parks, contributing to its attractiveness. Widzew, with one of the largest areas in Łódź, continues to develop, combining industry with residential and recreational areas.
