wikipedia
Zagórz is a town in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, located in the Bukowskie Foothills near the confluence of the Osława and San rivers. It serves as the seat of the urban-rural municipality and has a population of approximately 5,105 (2018 data). The history of Zagórz dates back to the 14th century, with the first records of the settlement appearing in 1343. Over the centuries, the town changed hands among various noble families, from the Tarnawskis and Stadnickis to the Łobaczewskis in the 19th century. At the heart of Zagórz lies the Discalced Carmelites Monastery, built in the early 18th century, which also served as a hospital. Culturally, the town gained prominence thanks to Zygmunt Kaczkowski, who wove local legends into his novels. Zagórz played a significant role in the development of the railway, which spurred its economic growth—especially after the construction of the railway line in 1872, making it an important railway junction. During conflicts, including World War II, the town held strategic importance. Defense committees and local units of the Home Army were established here, engaging in sabotage operations. In the postwar period (1945–1947), Zagórz became a refuge for residents of nearby villages fleeing attacks by the OUN-UPA. The town was granted city status in 1977. Architectural attractions include the 18th-century Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches. The town also features cemeteries, including a section dedicated to soldiers who fell in battles against the UPA. Modern Zagórz is an educational center with several primary schools and a middle school. Notable honorary citizens include Pope John Paul II and Father Eugeniusz Dryniak. The town engages in international cooperation with municipalities in Slovakia and Switzerland. Zagórz is also a popular starting point for trips into the Bieszczady Mountains. Tourists are drawn to the ruins of the monastery on Mariemont Hill and nearby viewpoints offering stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.
