Skarżyski County, established in 1999 as part of the administrative reform, is located in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, with its seat in the city of Skarżysko-Kamienna. It is the smallest but most highly urbanized county in the region. It borders the counties of Kielce, Końskie, and Starachowice within the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, as well as Szydłowiec County in the Masovian Voivodeship. The county comprises urban, urban-rural, and rural municipalities, and its demographics show a decline in population from 73,991 in 2019 to 73,567 in 2020.
The natural assets of Skarżyski County are significant, as nearly 60% of its area is covered by forest complexes, remnants of the Świętokrzyska Wilderness. The region is home to several nature reserves, including Świnia Góra and Dalejów, as well as the archaeological reserve Rydno and landscape parks such as the Suchedniowsko-Oblęgorski Park and Sieradowicki Landscape Park. The Kamienna River, with its numerous tributaries, flows through the county, and its southern reaches extend into the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.
Over the years, the county has undergone several territorial changes aimed at expanding the administrative boundaries of its cities and municipalities. Architecturally, the county features both modern industrial buildings and historical structures that reflect the region’s rich past. Culturally, Skarżyski County is a hub of numerous events and traditions that paint a vibrant picture of the local community.
An interesting fact is that the county’s areas are an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts, thanks to well-preserved ecosystems and diverse flora and fauna. Additionally, the Rydno archaeological reserve attracts attention due to traces of settlements and prehistoric findings. With its wealth of nature and culture, Skarżyski County has much to offer both residents and tourists.
