wikipedia
The Wkrzańska Forest, known as the Ueckermünder Heide, is an extensive forest area spanning both Germany (Vorpommern-Greifswald district) and Poland (West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Police County, and partially the city of Szczecin). Covering approximately 1,550 km², with 337 km² located within Poland, this ancient woodland is part of the Natura 2000 network due to its diverse ecosystems and rich natural resources. On the Polish side, the most valuable natural site is the Świdwie Reserve, which protects rare bird species. The eastern boundary of the forest is marked by the Oder River, while roads and railway lines form its western edge. The area is dominated by pine and mixed pine-beech forests, with old-growth stands providing habitat for white-tailed eagles. Although lakes and rivers are scarce, the region features Lake Świdwie and waterways such as the Wkra and Gunica rivers. Within Szczecin's boundaries, the Wkrzańska Forest includes several woodland parks, such as Arkoński, Głębokie, and Mścięcino. The German portion of the forest forms part of the Naturpark Am Stettiner Haff (Szczecin Lagoon Nature Park). Notable natural features include the Friedländer Große Wiese peat bog. The historical backdrop of the region includes a now-defunct railway line that once connected numerous settlements around the forest. Today, the area is a popular recreational destination for residents of Szczecin, offering numerous hiking trails on both the Polish and German sides. The landscape is particularly admired for its scenic values, including the Warszewskie Hills and access to the Szczecin Lagoon, making it a significant weekend tourism spot. The forest boasts an extensive network of hiking and cycling routes, such as the Szlak Puszczy Wkrzańskiej (Wkrzańska Forest Trail), the Szlak Ornitologów (Ornithologists’ Trail), and international cycling paths, attracting nature enthusiasts and those seeking active recreation. Rich in natural, historical, and cultural heritage, the Wkrzańska Forest remains a compelling destination for both tourists and nature lovers.
