The Wałbrzyskie Mountains, also known as the Waldenburger Bergland, are a mountain range in the Central Sudetes, entirely located within Poland. The main city of the region is Wałbrzych, with smaller towns including Boguszów-Gorce, Szczawno-Zdrój, and Jedlina-Zdrój, as well as several rural communes such as Stare Bogaczowice and Czarny Bór. The mountain range stretches 35 km from northwest to southeast, connecting the Bóbr River valley with the Bystrzyca River valley. It borders the Kamienne Mountains to the south, is separated from the Góry Lisie by the Bóbr River to the west, and transitions into the Wałbrzych Foothills to the north. The range features various massifs, such as the Trójgarb Massif, Chełmiec, and the Czarne Mountains. The highest peak is Borowa, reaching 853 meters above sea level, making it the dominant feature in the landscape, as for a long time Chełmiec (850 m above sea level) was considered the highest. The geological structure of the Wałbrzyskie Mountains is primarily based on sedimentary rocks such as sandstones and shales, as well as volcanic rocks, including porphyries. Hydrologically, the area belongs to the Oder River basin, with important rivers including the Pełcznica and Lesk. Nature conservation in the region is ensured by protected landscape areas, including the Chełmiec, Trójgarb, and Krzyżowa Góra domes. The region is characterized by rich biodiversity and a history of mining, particularly hard coal, which has shaped not only the landscape but also the local history and culture. Wałbrzych and its surroundings have historically been known for intensive mining and industrial activity, influencing architectural development with numerous industrial buildings that now often serve as tourist attractions. Interestingly, the region has also developed health resorts that attract visitors from across Poland and abroad. Breathtaking views and extensive hiking trails provide excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, making the Wałbrzyskie Mountains a popular destination for both hiking enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation in a picturesque setting.
